19th Century French Stoneware Confit Pot — Large Grès Storage Jar
French, 19th century
A large and generous French stoneware confit pot dating to the 19th century — a vessel with both working history and quiet sculptural presence. Hand-thrown in grès, its broad rounded body, chalk-grey glaze and double pulled handles speak of a time when such pots were essential to the rhythms of a French farmhouse kitchen.
There is something deeply satisfying about its form. The surface carries scattered iron flecks, glaze pooling and the natural irregularities of 19th-century hand-thrown pottery — marks of making that give it warmth and authenticity. At this scale it commands a room, yet sits without effort in a wide range of interiors.
Provenance & History
French, 19th century. Confit pots — known in French as grès — were essential vessels in southern French kitchens, traditionally used to store preserved meats such as duck or goose under a layer of fat. Built to last and made in regional potteries across France, they were practical objects of the highest order. Today they are collected as decorative antiques, valued for their generous form, honest materials, and the quiet authority of things made to be used.
Design Notes
Hand-thrown grès stoneware construction
Pale chalk-grey glaze with natural variation
Two pulled handles Subtle ribbing around the neck
Broad, rounded body tapering to a steady base
Scattered iron flecks and glaze pooling throughout
The combination of generous scale, double handles and softly irregular glaze gives this confit pot a presence that works as well filled with branches or flowers as it does standing alone.
Condition
Good antique condition. Structurally solid with age-appropriate wear including light surface marks, glaze irregularities and small imperfections that add to its authentic, timeworn character.
Dimensions
Height 30cm Width 33cm Depth 30cm
Styling Inspiration
Anchor a kitchen table or dresser, sit it by a fireplace filled with dried hydrangeas or seasonal branches, or let it stand alone as a sculptural object in a hallway or on a console. Its generous proportions and understated French country form work equally well in rustic and more refined interiors.
A large and characterful piece of 19th-century French stoneware — collected with purpose, and ready to live with again.
