19th-Century French Stoneware Grès Confit Pot with Handle

A classic piece of French country kitchenware, this antique grès confit pot has all the quiet character of daily life in rural France. Once used to preserve duck and goose in their own fat, it now feels equally at home filled with flowers or simply admired for its soft, timeworn glaze.

Provenance & History

Made in France during the 19th century, confit pots (from confire, “to preserve”) were designed to be practical vessels for storing preserved meats. The upper half is glazed to seal and protect, while the base remains unglazed so the pot could be partly buried in cool earth or cellars — a vital design before refrigeration.

Design Notes

  • Hand-thrown French stoneware (grès)

  • Pale, neutral glaze with subtle tonal variation

  • One sturdy side handle for lifting and carrying

  • Classic rounded form with tactile surface details that speak of age and use

Condition

Great, time-worn condition with gentle irregularities and natural patina consistent with its history. Glaze drips, tiny flecks, and firing marks are all celebrated features of its hand-crafted origins.

Dimensions

Height: 23cm
Diameter: 21 cm x 27cm

Styling Inspiration

Perfect as a rustic vase for fresh flowers, a characterful utensil pot in the kitchen, or displayed in a group of French stoneware on open shelving. Its soft tones and lived-in surface bring instant warmth and history to modern interiors.
