This is an absolutely stunning solid silver cocktail set for juicing citrus fruit. The marks indicate that this set was made by the famous Parisian silversmith - Louis Coignet, dated 1889 - 1893.
Initially we were surprised by the date as we were under the impression that cocktails were at their most popular during the 1920's but after some research we can see that cocktails date back as far as the 1700's.
'In 1869, the first British book containing cocktail recipes was published: William Terrington's Cooling Cups and Dainty Drinks. Reaching back to that first use of the word cocktail, his first recipe was for a Gin Cocktail made with brandy or gin, ginger syrup, aromatic bitters, and a splash of water.' Telegraph online
This beautiful set comprises of a glass juicer with solid silver handle, a silver spoon, cup and sieve. All of which have a "argent massif" 950 solid silver mark, along with the makers mark.
The set comes in it's original box which is also in a very nice condition.
This is possibly the finest, least elegantly knackered piece we have ever sourced. We found it on a French antique market where a lady sells the most exquisite silverware. It was love at first sight as soon as we spotted this set.
